Kathmandu is one of the best cities in Asia to explore on two wheels. The valley is compact enough to cover in a day, diverse enough to keep you riding for a week, and the roads, chaotic as they are, reward the kind of flexible, spontaneous movement that only a bike makes possible. From the ancient streets of Patan to the winding climb toward Nagarkot, from the morning quiet of Boudhanath to the crowded evening market in Asan, a bike gets you there faster, cheaper, and with more freedom than any other option.
This guide covers everything you need to know about renting a bike in Kathmandu in 2026, from daily prices and the documents you need to which model to choose, what the rental process looks like, and the mistakes most first-timers make.
If you are deciding between a scooter and a bike, we cover that comparison in detail in our article on scooter vs bike rental in Kathmandu. This guide focuses specifically on motorbike rental for riders who want something with more power and presence than a scooter.
Bike Rental Prices in Kathmandu 2026
Motorbike rental in Kathmandu is priced higher than scooter rental in Kathmandu, and for good reason: larger engines, higher maintenance costs, and greater mechanical complexity mean the daily rate reflects a genuinely different product.
Here is what the market looks like in 2026:
150cc bikes: daily commuter class: Yamaha FZ V2 150cc: NPR 2000 to NPR 2,500 per day; Bajaj Pulsar 150: NPR 1,800 to NPR 2,000 per day; Honda CB150: NPR 1,700 to NPR 1,900 per day
200cc–250cc bikes — mid-range adventure Yamaha FZ V3 250cc: NPR 2,200 to NPR 2,600 per day Bajaj NS200: NPR 2,200 to NPR 2,500 per day Honda Hornet 160R: NPR 2,000 to NPR 2,400 per day
350cc–450cc bikes — adventure and touring Royal Enfield Himalayan 411: NPR 3,000 to NPR 3,500 per day Royal Enfield Classic 350: NPR 2,800 to NPR 3,200 per day Royal Enfield Himalayan 450: NPR 3,500 to NPR 4,500 per day
At MeroRide, we currently offer the Yamaha FZ V2 150cc for daily and long-term rental in Lalitpur, starting from NPR 2,300 per day. More models are being added to our fleet shortly; check current availability at app.meroride.com.np/book.

Why Rent the Yamaha FZ V2 in Kathmandu
The FZ V2 is one of the most popular 150cc bikes in Nepal, and for good reason. It sits in a sweet spot that the valley’s roads are genuinely suited for.
Engine and performance. The 149cc single-cylinder fuel-injected engine produces enough power for comfortable city riding and handles inclines, the climb toward Godavari, the switchbacks near Chandragiri, the approach roads to Nagarkot without laboring. It is not an adventure tourer, but it is more than capable of everything the Kathmandu Valley demands on a daily basis.
Handling in city traffic. The FZ V2 weighs around 132kg with a low center of gravity, which makes it manageable in Kathmandu’s dense traffic. It is narrow enough to filter through gaps and responsive enough to make quick corrections on the chaotic junction approaches that define riding in this city.
Fuel efficiency. For a 150cc bike, the FZ V2 returns a solid 40 to 45 kilometers per liter in mixed city riding. A full tank in Kathmandu costs roughly NPR 400 to NPR 450 and takes you far enough for a full day of valley exploration without needing to refuel.
Rider comfort. The seating position is slightly sporty but not aggressive, comfortable for two to three hours of continuous riding, which covers most day-trip scenarios in the valley. Two-up riding is possible, but the FZ V2 is fundamentally a solo bike; the rear seat is functional rather than generous.
Availability and parts. As one of the most common bikes on Nepali roads, FZ V2 parts are available at virtually every mechanic across the country. If something minor needs attention during a longer rental, you are never far from a solution, unlike some imported adventure bikes where parts may need to come from Kathmandu specifically.
Documents Required to Rent a Bike in Kathmandu
This is the most important practical section of this guide. Get the documents wrong, and you will not be riding anything.
For Nepali citizens:
- Original citizenship certificate
- Valid two-wheeler driving license (must cover motorcycles, not just scooters)
- Active phone number
For tourists and foreign nationals:
- Original passport
- International driving permit (IDP), this is non-negotiable for legal riding
- Valid home country driving license as supporting document
- Hotel or local contact address
One critical point for tourists: Nepal recognizes international driving permits for tourists riding in the country, but traffic police enforcement has increased significantly in recent years. Riding without a valid IDP as a foreigner can result in fines, and rental businesses have been held accountable for renting to unlicensed riders. Any rental business that rents to you without checking your license is doing both of you a disservice.
For a complete breakdown of the rental process, including document checks, inspection, and what to do at pickup, see our step-by-step guide to renting a scooty in Lalitpur; the process is identical for bike rentals.
How to Rent a Bike in Kathmandu: Step by Step
Step 1: Decide your rental duration and book ahead. Walk-in availability is unreliable, especially during festival seasons and weekends. Book at least a day in advance. At MeroRide, you can check live availability and confirm your booking online.
Step 2: Bring your documents to pick up. Citizenship or passport, driving license, and any deposit amount agreed at booking. Have originals, not photocopies.
Step 3: Inspect the bike before riding. Walk around it completely. Photograph any existing scratches, dents, or damage before accepting the bike. Check brake response, tyre condition, indicators, horn, and fuel level. A trustworthy rental operator will do this with you, not instead of you.
Step 4: Confirm the return policy. Know your exact return time. Understand the late return policy; most operators charge a pro-rated hourly fee after a grace period. Confirm fuel policy; most rentals require you to return the bike at the same fuel level as pickup.
Step 5: Ride within your ability. Kathmandu traffic is genuinely chaotic. If you are new to riding in South Asian city traffic, spend the first thirty minutes on quieter roads before entering the main junctions. The FZ V2 is forgiving, but no bike protects you from overconfidence.
Best Routes to Explore on a Rented Bike from Kathmandu
The Kathmandu Valley on a motorbike opens routes that simply do not work on a scooter or public transport.
Kathmandu to Nagarkot (32km, 1 to 1.5 hours). A classic valley ride. The road climbs steadily from Bhaktapur into the hills, with Himalayan views on clear mornings. The FZ V2 handles the gradient comfortably. Early morning departure recommended for mountain visibility.
Lalitpur to Godavari (12km, 30 minutes): A shorter ride that rewards with a botanical garden, forest walks, and significantly cooler air than the valley floor. Good for a half-day trip from Lalitpur or Patan.
Kathmandu to Dakshinkali (22km, 45 minutes): South of the valley through Pharping, this route has more hills and tighter roads than the eastern valley routes. Good for intermediate riders wanting something more engaging than straight city riding.
Kathmandu to Chandragiri Hills (20km to base): The approach road to Chandragiri has steady climbing and good road surface. Rewarding views from the top. The FZ V2 is appropriate for this route.
Patan to Bungamati and Khokana (8km loop): Two ancient Newari villages south of Patan, connected by a narrow road that is best explored at low speed. This is a cultural ride rather than a performance ride; a scooter is equally suitable here.

Bike Rental vs Scooter Rental: Which Should You Choose in Kathmandu?
This question comes down to three things: where you are riding, how experienced you are, and whether you are riding solo or two-up.
Choose a bike if: you are covering longer distances outside the city, you are an experienced rider comfortable on larger, heavier machines, you want more power for hill climbs or highway stretches, or you prioritize riding feel over pure practicality.
Choose a scooter if: you are primarily in the city, you are a newer or returning-to-riding rider, you want lighter and easier urban maneuvering, or you are doing short trips where a 150cc engine is more than sufficient.
The cost difference is meaningful over a longer rental period. A Yamaha FZ V2 at NPR 2,300 per day versus a Honda Dio at NPR 1,100 per day, over a week, that is a lot of difference. Whether the additional capability and riding experience justify that gap depends on your plans.
For a detailed breakdown of the scooter options available in Lalitpur, see our comparison of Honda Dio vs TVS Ntorq.
Monthly Bike Rental in Kathmandu
For residents, students, and long-term travelers, monthly bike rental makes strong financial sense. A Yamaha FZ V2 on a monthly rate typically comes in at NPR 35,000 to NPR 50,000 depending on the operator, which works out to NPR around 1600-1700 per day, significantly lower than the standard daily rate.
If you are deciding between monthly bike rental and monthly ride sharing, the math strongly favors renting your own bike for anyone making more than three trips per day. We cover this calculation in full in our article on monthly scooter rental in Kathmandu: Is it worth it?
What to Watch Out For When Renting a Bike in Kathmandu
Holding your original passport. Some rental businesses in Thamel ask for your original passport as collateral. This leaves you without identification for the rental period and creates unnecessary risk. A reputable operator accepts a cash deposit or citizenship copy instead.
No pre-rental inspection. If a rental operator does not walk you through the bike’s existing condition before you ride off, that is a warning sign. Any damage dispute at return time will default against you without photographic evidence of the pre-rental state.
Unclear insurance. Most bike rentals in Nepal do not include comprehensive insurance. You are responsible for repair costs from any damage during the rental period. Understand this before you sign anything.
Vague return time policies. “Return it by evening” is not a return time. Get a specific time in writing and understand the late fee structure before you leave.
Renting to unlicensed riders. If a business is willing to rent to you without checking your license, they are taking a legal shortcut that ultimately puts you at risk on the road. MeroRide checks licenses for every rental — this is non-negotiable.
